November's fast approaching, and with it Mission:Change's 3rd annual Hope for the Hungry and Homeless Sleep Out. While our previous two Sleep Outs defied even our high expectations, we're looking to raise the bar yet again in our continuing efforts to raise money and inspire action for the homeless and food insecure throughout our community and the country.

Along with musical favorites from previous years, like the incomparable Gabriel and the New Priest, we're excited to announce that this year's musical headliner will be Dove Award winning singer/songwriter Charlie Hall and his band, with the TJ Mauldin Band rounding out the lineup for what is sure to be a fantastic night of live music. We're also absolutely thrilled to announce that this year's keynote speaker will be Vaden Earle, author of One: A Face Behind the Numbers and founder and CEO of the not-for-profit Absolute Leadership Development. It's looking to to be an unforgettable night of community entertainment, education and action!

The Where & When: November 12, 2010. 7pm to 7am at the Exchange Club Fair Grounds in Albany, Georgia. (810 Westover Rd.)

Never heard of a Sleep Out? That's okay, you're not the only one. A Sleep Out is one of the ways we raise money and awareness forstat1 our homeless and food-insecure neighbors by inviting all participants to spend the night outside, in the elements, in a self-provided cardboard box.

Outside? Cardboard box? In November? You read correctly. Although we could never duplicate the real-life experience of what it is like to be truly homeless or to have to sleep in rough conditions - when loneliness, lack of food, poor health and fear of personal safety add to your concerns about when or where you will find a bed or have a change to rebuild your life - sleeping out for the night can focus all our thoughts on the hunger and homelessness right here in our area. Sleeping out for the night can educate each of us on how every single person can make a difference in ending homelessness and food insecurity in our highly impoverished community.

There has to be more than just sleeping out in boxes, right? You bet! In addition to pots of soup, coffee and hot chocolate, the Sleep Out seeks to entertain and educate through guest speakers from area food banks and homeless shelters along with the homeless themselves. It's our goal to not only raise as much money as we can, but also to teach people all the ways that they can continue making a tangible, positive difference in their community.

Who do the donations go to? All proceeds and items collected during the Sleep Out will benefit The Salvation Army, which provides temporary shelter for the homeless; Second Harvest of South stat2Georgia, which provides food and other grocery items to more than 300 partner agencies comprised of soup kitchens, rescue missions, abuse shelters, and other non-profit organizations; Flint River Habitat for Humanity, which aims to eliminate sub-standard housing amongst extremely impoverished people; and Mission:Change, which aims to raise money and awareness, and provide services for local individuals, causes and organizations in need.

How do I get involved? That's easy enough! Simply download and fill out the appropriate forms below, raise a minimum of $100 in pledges from family, friends and businesses, and show up the night of the Sleep Out with your box and blankets.

There are two ways to become a Sleeper:

Solo Sleeper - If you're participating by yourself, print and fill out the Registration & Consent and Waiver of Liability forms (found below), raise a minimum of $100 from family, friends and businesses, and show up the night of the event with everything you need to make your box creative and cozy.

Team Sleepers - Participate with your friends, family, book club, church group, knitting circle, whatever! Round up as many people as you can, fill out the requisite forms below, and, like the Solo Sleepers above, endeavor to raise $100 per person for everyone on your team. [Note: While only one Team Sign Up Form is needed per team, each participating member needs to fill out a Registration & Consent Form and Waiver of Liability.]
