It's crazy to think that anyone can be hungry in one of the most obese nations on earth, but for 1 out of 8 Americans, hunger is a reality. At this moment, millions of children throughout our nation are classified as food insecure, meaning that they face chronic hunger and undernourishment due to impoverishment. In fact, one out of five people in line at a soup kitchen is a child. This is a problem that goes beyond hunger itself, for children who are undernourished are at a greater risk for serious health, social and educational problems.
By one study, in 2007 some 37.3 million Americans lived in poverty and 36.2 million Americans lived in food insecure housholds, a figure comprised of 23.8 million adults and 12.4 million children. That same year, 3.9 million households had to resort to emergency food supplies from a local food pantry one or more times.
For every Hope for the Hungry t-shirt or necklace sold, Mission:Change will provide a meal to 32 food insecure men, women and children in your community.
